Fine Arts in Akka: Ahwach

Ahwach is a style of dancing unique to the
indigenous peoples of Morocco.
Natives to the land are referred to as
Amazigh. Each Amazigh tribe is different in the
way they dress ,speak--some speaking
Tamazight and others
speaking Tachelhit-- and celebrate their culture.
In the Tata province ahwache is very common.
Organized groups from various duars (villages)
each have a distinct style, and some of these
groups even go on to compete regionally,
nationally and sometimes internationally.
Akka, a small desert town in the Tata Province,
has 11 duoar surrounding center. Duars have
several performing groups. While they
are available to perform year round,
ahwach groups are most in demand
during wedding season and holidays.
There is a mens group womens group,
each group sings songs about hope,
happiness and love. If you are fortunate
enough to be in Akka when an ahwach
group is performing be sure to attend.
